Croque Monsieur
Ingredients:
- 8 slices of thick white bread 
- 4 slices of ham 
- 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère cheese 
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 
- 1 cup milk 
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese (for the Mornay sauce) 
- Salt and pepper to taste 
- A pinch of nutmeg 
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F. 
- Prepare the Mornay Sauce: - In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. 
- Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux. 
- Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. 
- Cook for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens. 
- Add 1/2 cup of grated Gruyère cheese, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Set aside. 
 
- Assemble the Sandwiches: - Lay 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet. 
- Spread a thin layer of Mornay sauce on each slice. 
- Add a slice of ham and a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese on top of the Mornay sauce. 
- Place the remaining bread slices on top to form sandwiches. 
 
- Top the Sandwiches: - Spread another layer of Mornay sauce on the top slice of each sandwich. 
- Sprinkle with the remaining Gruyère cheese and grated Parmesan cheese. 
 
- Bake: Bake the sandwiches in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the tops are golden brown. 
- Serve: Serve hot and enjoy your delicious Croque Monsieur with Mornay sauce!
